FRSC recommends speed limiting devices for safety

The Federal Road Safety Corps has urged
drivers to install speed limiting devices on
their vehicles as a means of reducing
accidents on the road.
FRSC corps Marshal, Osita Chidoka, gave the
advice during a nationwide sensitisation
forum for stakeholders on the negative
impact of speeding on the motoring
environment, according to a statement on
Monday.
The statement said the forum, which held in
Ilorin, Lokoja and Ado-Ekiti; brought
government officials and other stakeholders
together.
Osita, who was represented by Zonal Head of
Operations, Zone RS8, Ayobami Omiyale,
explained that speed violation accounted for
about 65 per cent of the causative factors of
road traffic crashes nationwide.
He said, “Analysis of crashes involving
commuter buses over a period of six years
(2007-2012) indicated that Toyota Hiace
buses were involved in 1,844 crashes, some of
which resulted in fire.
“Consequently, this forum make stakeholders
realise the dangerous consequences of speed
and the benefits of using speed limiting
devices. Benefits of speed limiting devices
include – less fuel consumption; prolonged
life span of the vehicle and and increased
ability of the driver to manoeuvre in the event
of an emergency.”
