ASUP Strike Update: Union Leaders Has Been Blamed For Non-Resolution Of Strike

The Supervising Minister of Education, Chief Nyesom Wike has blamed the lingering strike by the Academic Satff Union of Polytechnics ASUP on the leaders of the union for taking a hardline position instead of handling the issues on ground.

The Minister who spoke through his Special Assistant, Lambert Oprah said that he personally attended several meetings initiated by the minister with ASUP representatives where he laid the cards on the table and urged the union to accept the offers made by government and end the strike.

"It is sad that each time, the union leaders would say they will go back to consult with their members, they end up rejecting the offers made."

Oparah said one of the contentious issues  boarders on the payment of the arrears to the striking lecturers adding that given the huge amount involved, government offered to pay them on two installments, which the union rejected in writing.

"As it is now, most of the contentious issues with ASUP  have been addressed, a committee has been set up to harmonize the First Degree and HND dichotomy and boards of the various polytechnics and colleges have been inaugurated'', he said
