New Bayern Munich manager Pep Guardiola has ruled out a move for Chelsea defender David Luiz. The giant Brazilian has been one of the Premiership’s standout center backs in recent seasons, even impressing in the attacking half of the field with his freekick exploits. Guardiola, however, admits that he already has a wealth of defenders amid rumors of a move for Luiz.
“It is not true (that I will be signing
Luiz). I have four or five central defenders already and don’t need
another one,” Guardiola told reporters when asked about the rumors
linking Luiz with a move to the Bundesliga champions, according to The
Daily Mail.
Earlier this summer it was rumored that
returning Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho was shopping David Luiz around
the transfer window, with widespread reports that the Brazilian was even
included in a bid for Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney. The club
vehemently denied the rumors, and up to this point Jose Mourinho has
given no indication that he’s willing to part ways with Luiz.
Luiz will be competing for a spot in
Chelsea’s back four along with John Terry and former Bolton defender
Gary Cahill, and looks odds-on favorite to be included in Brazil’s
roster for next summer’s World Cup. In that case, chances are he won’t
have to make the trip from Germany, with Guardiola currently happy with
his defensive options.
